I often get asked how to search for cheap flights from Canada, so I decided to dedicate this blog post to answering that question.

Searching for flights online can seem daunting, especially if you are not too familiar with or even trusting of the online world, especially for ‘big ticket’ purchases.  Nowadays, online booking is the easiest and cheapest way to find amazing travel deals versus the traditional brick and mortar Travel Agency.

You have probably heard of those people who ONLY book their flights online; well I am one of those people and I am proof that it’s worth it. I have been booking my flights and hotels exclusively online for the past 10 years and after realizing the money I’ve been saving I will never go back to the traditional way of booking travel. I am confident that you can make the switch too. My suggestions on how to search for cheap flights from Canada, or from anywhere really, are listed below in no particular order:

Be Flexible With Your Dates

In my opinion this is the most important aspect in finding a great flight deal from Canada. If you can avoid travelling during the Christmas holiday season and the busy summer months you drastically increase your chances of finding a great flight deal. That being said, it isn’t impossible to find a deal during these periods but you are almost always guaranteed a cheap ticket when booking off-season.

Follow Airlines on Twitter

Airlines usually advertise their promotions and sales on Twitter. Sometimes these deals don’t last long or they sell out fast. They can also be lost in your Twitter feed so turning on notifications from airlines can help you score the deal you are looking for.  Follow these simple instructions on how to turn on Twitter notifications on your mobile device:

  • On your mobile device, navigate to the airline’s Twitter page
  • Once there, click on the little ‘gear’ icon and select “Turn on notifications”
  • Now every time an airline tweets, you will be notified on your mobile device.

Use Flight Metasearch Engines

I frequently use sites like Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo, Google Flights, ITA Matrix and Hipmunk to search for cheap flights. These sites, also known as Flight Metasearch Engines, compare the prices of multiple OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) such as Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline, and Flight Network to bring you the lowest price available. Please note, not all metasearch engines have the same OTAs available, meaning not all metasearch engines are the same. Therefore, when doing your search consider using more than one, if not all, and you are guaranteed to find the best deal out there.

Make Use of Flight Explore Tools on Kayak, Google Flights, Skyscanner and Momondo

These tools are what I often use to search for cheap flights from Canada. What these tools do is cache recently searched quotes from millions of users and bring you the cheapest results available. Kayak uses a map to display the cheapest routes. You can view their product here. Skyscanner and Google Flights have a similar system but instead of displaying the prices on the map they display them as text on their sites. Check out the image below on how to use the Skyscanner Explore Tool. Google Flights Explore tool can be found here. Note, Google Flights Explore displays prices in USD. Momondo’s tool is little bit different and requires a few more steps but it is equally as resourceful.

Here are the steps to search for cheap flight deals on Momondo:

  • Navigate to Momondo click on the flights link.
  • Scroll down until you reach Popular Destinations.
  • Click on the destination that interests you.
  • Under Popular Routes to <your destination> scroll through the recently searched quotes to find the cheapest flights available.

Follow Me on Twitter, Facebook and Sign Up for Email Alerts

The easiest way to search for cheap flights from Canada is to follow me on Twitter, Facebook or even better, sign up for my email alerts. I do all the work for you and send you notifications as soon as I post a new deal. Any of these 3 methods will work fine just remember to enable notifications on Twitter to get alerts sent directly to your phone.

Explore Mileage Run Deals Thread on Flyertalk Forum

You can also follow Mileage Run Deals on Flyertalk to search for cheap flight from Canada. At first it can be a little overwhelming to understand the lingo and acronyms, but once you are past that stage some great deals can be found on here. The more time you spend reading it the more you will pick up.

Develop a Flight Monitor Script

Last but not least, if you are techy and nerdy like me you could make use of various APIs available out there (usually for free) to create a computer script / program that monitors flight prices to search for cheap flights from Canada. If you would like more info on how to create one please contact me and I will be glad to lend me expertise.
